Another advantage of the Electoral College is that it localizes any problems. Imagine if Florida 2000 had been nationwide, with votes being challenged and recounted in every single precinct across the country....because that would have been the effect. If you can neutralize a thousand votes in Florida by picking up a thousand in Texas, then it would have been in the interest of both camps to demand a complete recount everywhere.
