Energy
Problem is that as energy costs increase, energy is becoming one of the major drivers of air travel cost. So you really don't want to take your car with you on the plane. In fact, the biggest problem with the passenger module I detail above is it does add weight to the plane, but not nearly so much as adding not just a private enclosure for each passenger but also an engine and its fuel/batteries and crash-resistant chassis and so on.
I think the reverse is going to happen. We are going to still own vehicles but we will use rented vehicles much more often because they can drive themselves and deliver themselves to pick us up where we need them. And these vehicles will be able to download information on how to personalize themselves for us. We'll have small modular cases for the glove compartments and trunk.
