 <description>&lt;p&gt;Problem is that as energy costs increase, energy is becoming one of the major drivers of air travel cost.  So you really don&#039;t want to take your car with you on the plane.  In fact, the biggest problem with the passenger module I detail above is it does add weight to the plane, but not nearly so much as adding not just a private enclosure for each passenger but also an engine and its fuel/batteries and crash-resistant chassis and so on.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I think the reverse is going to happen.  We are going to still own vehicles but we will use rented vehicles much more often because they can drive themselves and deliver themselves to pick us up where we need them.   And these vehicles will be able to download information on how to personalize themselves for us.  We&#039;ll have small modular cases for the glove compartments and trunk.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Windows</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Well, you are partly right.   I don&#039;t believe they can easily have windows in a bombproof chamber, though it&#039;s not out of the question that this might be developed, though no doubt at some cost in weight.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;However, if you leave out the bombproof concept, windows are not a problem, there are just 2 of them.   Strictly speaking, the passenger module could actually be open on the sides, other than the risk of passengers catching things or hurting themselves as the module slides out of the train and into the empty aircraft hull.   So it could either have thin regular windows set to align with the pressurized windows of the hull, or it could have panels that slide up to protect you while things are moving, but open up to see out.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Windows actually do perform a role.  Looking out the window is the best protection against airsickness.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If the passenger cabin is pressurized, the outer hull could have more ordinary windows as it would not be.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Now in this case a bomb would blow out the windows and depressurize the plane.  This is not the end of the world of course, as oxygen masks come down and the pilots would not be affected, and the plane would descend quickly.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The real issue is making sure that a bomb doesn&#039;t make the aircraft unairworthy, and thus kill those who were not close to it.   That&#039;s the difference between bombs on trains and on planes, a bomb on a plane has a better shot of crashing the plane and killing everybody else.   I&#039;m not skilled enough in the new bomb-resistant designs to know if they could handle windows that blow out.    (Blowouts forward of the air intakes could also present a problem.)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is actually much harder to blow out an airplane window than people think, as Mythbusters discovered.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Key to this design is modern fly-by-wire.    With fly-by-wire, aircraft control goes over multiple redundant data cables.  You can sever most of them and not hurt control.   Slightly more expensive is to have enough redundant power cables so severing those will not disable the aircraft.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Right now the key is that it&#039;s much easier to scan for and prevent big bombs, so the thing that needs heavy passenger/bag scrutiny is small bombs.  If you design your plane so that it can survive small bombs, you don&#039;t need that heavy security, other than to protect the passengers who will be near the small bomb.   Which of course you would like to do, but in reality you can&#039;t prevent suicide terrorists from finding closely packed people and blowing themselves up among them.  Stopping it in the skies is of no special extra value compared to stopping it in malls, on trains, and in airport security lines -- which are inherently unsecured and could be subject to large bombs.    If you make the situation similar to a train you can have similar security needs to rail.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>windows on train in plane</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Sounds like the passengers would have no windows, at least in flight.  Though the bomb proof part might imply no windows at all.  I realize that windows are not really useful for passengers in flight, but I think many people would be uncomfortable without them anyways.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>A plane that goes on a train</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;As I noted, at DLD Lufthansa had a contest (which I won) for suggestions on how to innovate to compete with trains.  They set the time horizon out 15 years, which really means a lot is possible, so while I mostly threw in ideas from this blog which are short term, I put in some longer term ones too.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;One was the equivalent of &amp;#8220;multi modal transport.&amp;#8221;   To do this, you would build new short-haul planes which consisted of an empty shell, like the cargo planes you have seen where the nose hinges up, and cargo modules are slid in on rails.   This would be combine with &amp;#8220;passenger modules&amp;#8221; which can slide into the shell, and which can also slide into a special rail car.   There might be one module on a plane, though it is also possible to have several.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Passengers would board a train normally at the train station.   Then, as the train moved to the airport, they could move to the passenger module car.  They would place their luggage onto a belt to put it down low into the luggage module (under the passenger module) or be assisted by a porter.   They would enter the passenger module, stow their carry-ons and otherwise get ready in their seat.   By the time the train got to the airport, all passengers would be in their seats, belted and ready.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The train would split up into different cars if there were several flights on it, and each would move to a terminus where the plane-shell was waiting.  Yet to be invented technology would laser-align the train and the parked shell in advance, and then the passenger module would slip into the aircraft hull on special rails.   Connecting passengers could board the train at the airport before it moves to the hull, and their bags could be loaded into the bottom the standard way.   (Though this is for short-haul flights, so there may not be connecting passengers.)  An automated system would connect power, data and air venting on the passenger modules.   Water/sewage would be self-contained and processed at the train station.  Catering would probably be handled there too.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The nose would come down, the pilots board via their own door and takeoff would begin shortly.&lt;/p&gt;
