BENTELER Establishes HOLON, new Autonomous Mobility Brand, Unveils Autonomous Mover

Germany's BENTELER has established a new autonmous mobility brand – HOLON. The company will focus on the business of developing fully electric, autonomous movers.

d's first autonomous mover that meets automotive standards at CES 2023 in Las Vegas.

HOLON has worked closely with various partners on the autonmous mover, including the Italian design company Pininfarina, the mobility provider Beep, and Mobileye, an Intel company.

HOLON will be the first OEM for autonomous movers with the standards and scaling potential we know from the automotive industry. With our platform technology, our vehicle expertise, and our strong partner network, it's our goal to redefine passenger transport – in both the public and private sectors."

Areas of application and thus customers are not only public transport companies, but also municipalities and private institutions such as campuses, airports, national parks, and others. Another field is last-mile delivery.

The first pilot applications, also outside of North America, are to be announced in the coming months and will be developed from 2023 onwards.

The shuttles are scheduled to go into production in the United States starting in 2025.

HAMBURG’S HOCHBAHN AG COOPERATE ON AUTONOMOUS DRIVING

HOLON, the specialist in autonomous shuttle vehicles, and Hamburg’s Hochbahn AG (HOCHBAHN), Germany's second-largest public transport company, plan to jointly push forward the expansion of customer-friendly and climate-friendly mobility services. For this, the companies have agreed a memorandum of understanding for the further development of autonomous shuttles for use in public transport.

The core of the new partnership is to create innovative solutions for autonomous on-demand systems in public transport. HOLON and HOCHBAHN aim to develop and test the operation of an autonomous mobility service under real conditions in a pilot area on public roads. The aim is also to raise the general perception of autonomous vehicles on the roads and thus their acceptance by road users and passengers.

HOLON, an independent company of the BENTELER Group, is a manufacturer of autonomous movers. Together with its partners, the company is developing a homologated, fully electric, and autonomous shuttle for use on public roads. The accessible vehicle is equipped with an automated ramp, a secure wheelchair space and auditory and visual support. It will make its world debut in January at CES 2023 in Las Vegas. The cooperation with HOCHBAHN is the first project for HOLON in Germany. On Hamburg's roads, the vehicle could, for the first-time drive in 2024.

The cooperation will begin in the coming year with the perspective of contributing to fulfilling the “Hamburg-Takt” initiative in the long term. By 2030, every Hamburg resident should be within five minutes of access to a public mobility service from morning to evening. Autonomous on-demand services are expected to make a significant contribution to this.

Henrik Falk, Chairman of the Executive Board of HOCHBAHN: “Autonomous on-demand services will help shape the mobility of the future and play an important role in Hamburg-Takt. With this cooperation, we want to take a decisive step toward the use of such vehicles in local public transport. With HOLON, we have a very strong partner for this.”

HOCHBAHN already has experience in the innovative field of autonomous driving gained from the HEAT (Hamburg Electric Autonomous Transportation) research and development project. This ran from 2019 to October 2021 and tested whether autonomously driving minibuses could supplement public transport in the future. For example, where the use of full-size vehicles isn’t economical, i.e. in the suburbs or at off-peak times.

Hamburg will have both VW's MOIA and Hochbahn/Holon autonomous projects. Based on recent reports from the German press, Mobileye will also provide the autonomy technology for MOIA.

A year ago Mobileye was touting a broad cooperation between itself and partners Sixt (the rental car company) and Nio Motors (the China-based EV maker) for robotaxi services in cities ranging from Munich to Miami, Detroit, Tokyo, and Paris. But Mobileye really had something very different in mind ...

On a call with analysts, Mobileye executives said the company wasn’t really launching commercial robotaxi services. Nor was the company using its vehicles – many based on Nio Motors EVs - specifically for data gathering.

Mobileye execs suggested that the multiple city introductions of small numbers of vehicles was more of a proof of concept – a demonstration of the company’s ability to rapidly scale its driverless operations. Mobileye’s goal is to overcome the barrier of multi-city, global operations by demonstrating the ability of its systems to ramp up local operations within a matter of weeks – as compared with the months or years of test driving that rivals such as Waymo and Cruise appear to require.

But Mobileye was even more specific in describing its ambitions, echoing statements made at the IAA Mobility event in Munich one year ago. Mobileye’s goal is to prove and demonstrate the reliability and capability of its systems with the intent of attracting partners, such as Sixt, that might bring driverless cars to market to fulfil their own objectives.

In other words, Mobileye has no plans to launch its own commercial robotaxi service. The robotaxi operational mode is merely a useful one for demonstrating and refining the capabilities of the system. ....

Bundling of expertise for development and testing projects on autonomous ride-pooling in Hamburg

Joint development of specific proposals for the implementation of the "Hamburg-Takt" initiative by 2030.

Hamburg, 13 January 2022 – Hamburger Hochbahn AG (HOCHBAHN), Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and MOIA are planning joint projects in the coming years to drive forward the transformation of mobility in Hamburg. This is the outcome of a memorandum of understanding presented by the companies today. The agreement focuses on collaboration in autonomous driving, inter-modality and the development of proposals for the implementation of the "Hamburg-Takt". The aim of the cooperation is to reduce traffic-related emissions and noise, increase the efficiency of road traffic and improve the integration of public and private mobility services.

The first concrete example of the new partnership is the Hamburg pilot project for autonomous driving by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and MOIA. HOCHBAHN will contribute its expertise from its own autonomous project "HEAT" and, among other things, help set up entry and exit stops. In addition, HOCHBAHN will participate in the testing of the autonomous ride-pooling service with a contingent for the closed user group. MOIA and VWN will share their findings and experiences from the trial with HOCHBAHN, particularly with regard to observed usage patterns, feedback on the service experience, and acceptance of fully automated passenger interaction.

Furthermore, the partnership focuses on measures to implement the "Hamburg-Takt". The project partners have agreed to work together to develop specific proposals for expanding attractive and climate-friendly mobility services and to bring these into public debate. By 2030, every Hamburg resident should have access to a high-quality public mobility service within five minutes from morning to evening. The aim is to make the privately used car in Hamburg obsolete for even more people.

Hamburg is becoming the model city for innovative mobility in Europe.

HOCHBAHN and ZF have agreed on a partnership.

Key data presented recently envisage that the ZF vehicles will be electrically powered and offer space for up to 22 people. Initially, they will be able to operate in dedicated lanes reserved only for them. Later, according to the plans, they will also be able to drive autonomously in road traffic. ZF will not only supply the Level 4-capable vehicle but will also be involved in the creation of the route layout. In addition, ZF will accompany the installation and commissioning of the shuttle systems, offer training for employees and workshops, and support the operator with a complete package for service and repair.
